Bizarre, Crazy, Silly, Unknown Holidays & Observances

December comes from the word decem, "ten," because this had been the tenth month of the early Roman calendar.  (Note: Although it's our 12th month, it never was changed.)

Full Moon on  the 23rd is called "Cold Moon" by Native Americans of New England and the Great Lakes because at this time of the year the nights are long, the days are short and so less sunlight means more cold days. It's also been called "The Long Nights Moon" or "The Moon Before The Yule."

In 2026, this moon is also called a "Super Moon" because it will reach 90% of its perigree and be closest to the Earth.  This means it's going to look bigger than normal.

December 13-14 - Geminids Meteor Shower which is consider the best meteor shower ever!  It produces up to 120 multi-colored meteors per hour when it peaks! This runs from December 7-17, but peaks on December 13 (night) and morning of December 14.  Unfortunately, the full moon will block out most of the lighter meteors and there's still a lot of big bright ones to see.

December 21 is the Winter Solstice in which the South Pole will be tilted toward the Sun, which will be at its southernmost position in the sky and will be directly over the Tropic of Capricorn.  This results in the shortest day of the year.  It is the first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of summer in the Southern Hemisphere.

December 21-22 - Ursids Meteor Shower, which is a minor one that only produces about 5-10 meteors per hour.  It runs from December 17-25 but peaks this year on December 21 (night) and December 22 (morning).  Thus, this is a Winter Solstice Shower!
