"Veteran's Day"

I wrote this poem years ago as a dedication to a friend's older brother who lost his legs in Viet Nam only to be killed later during a robbery at his home. The only small piece of justice is that the murderers were caught and sent to prison. His sister never got over her brother's personal sacrifice ( she died last year) nor his untimely death. I regret never stopping and chatting. So, this poem is for all Disabled Vets from any war/conflict who feel people don't notice or care. We do. We just don't know what to say until it's too late. :(

Unsung Hero

He was just another graduate
of the town that I come from.
But I wonder just how many of us
Ever stopped to thank him for what he'd done?
I doubt if he even knew me
Or recognized my name;
Yet, every time I heard "Viet Nam" I thought of him just the same.

And, every time I'd see him
Sitting in his wheelchair,
It was impossible not to think
Of the hell he'd gone through over there.
It wasn't just his legs he'd lost;
There was his pride and dignity.
Those were his sacrifices for us;
(So that we could live in America)
Home of the Brave - Land of the Free!

I am proud to be an American
But I feel selfish in a way.
Because freely I ran here and there
And never once bothered to say...
"Hi, I'm a friend of your sister
And, you probably don't know who I am;
But I just wanna say 'thanks' for
Serving in Viet Nam."

They found him lying dead one day,
On the floor next to his wheelchair.
Burglary the police had said.
But I said it just wasn't fair!

We will no longer see him
And be reminded of what he's done.
But below his name they should add,
"A Hero Who's Unsung."
